I am so excited about all of the learning that is
happening in our kindergarten classroom!
Math:
In math we are exploring pattern blocks, working
with tens frames, graphing, sorting, and comparing lengths. Every day I write a message to the
class on chart paper. In that
message, I always try to include a hands-on activity to teach/reinforce math
skills in our curriculum.
Language
Arts:
In Language Arts, I have introduced our first two
letter sounds from our Lively Letters Program. The sounds are /p/ and /b/. Here are some questions you can ask your kindergartener at
home:
What do you do with your
lips when you make the /p/ sound?
What do you do with your
lips when you make the /b/?
Who is the character
that makes the /p/ sound?
(Answer: Tall Mother.
She is quiet because her baby is sleeping)
Who is the character
that makes the /b/ sound?
(Answer: The Noisy Baby?)
What words begin with
the /p/ sound?
What words begin with
the /b/ sound?
In writing, we wrote short stories about things we
like to do with apples. I had to
remind students that pictures help us tell stories. You do not have to know how to write letters/words to write
stories.
Handwriting:
In handwriting we are learning how to correctly
form capital “F”. Ask
your kindergartener about big line down, frog jump, little line, little line.
Mentor
Text:
The mentor text I used this week was about John
Chapman, often known as Johnny Appleseed.
Our class was excited to learn that this pioneer was born in Leominster,
MA!
In our social curriculum, we are learning about
being respectful to our friends in school. One area in particular that we are honing in on is how we
behave during lessons, and how we show respect when teachers and classmates are
speaking.
Concepts
for the Car Ride:
(Concepts for the Car Ride is a section of my blog
that gives you tips on what to practice with your kindergartener in the car,
before bed, in the bath, or at the dinner table)
- Rhyming words
- Words that begin with /p/ and /b/
- Counting from 0-20 (or higher without any errors)
- Counting backwards from 10-0 (or begin higher if your child can)
- Characters in books
